Youngsters revel in camping experience

Heavy rain did not stop children living with cancer from having a blast as part of a week-long summer camp in Queenstown yesterday.  

About 30 children staying at Lakeland Park camp site in Kelvin Heights were being treated to a fun-filled week of activities, including karting, swimming, a magic show and a big water-fight.  

Camp Quality southern regional manager Kevin Seales said the camp gives them "a break from thinking about cancer and the troubles they have been through".   

"Our objective is fun, hope and happiness, so we just try to instil that in them, really."   

The youngsters were meant to be playing on a large waterslide yesterday but they had to postpone it, due to rain in the resort, and instead enjoyed an arts and crafts session indoors before going swimming.  

A team of up to 70 volunteers was on hand to make the annual camp, which was fully funded by donations and grants, a special experience for the children.  

Baskets of Blessing dropped off gift baskets for the group after they arrived on Saturday.  

Children will stay at the camp until Friday.
