How Jamie Wood went from Camp Quality volunteer to fundraiser
It’s not every day that you meet someone who isn’t afraid to bring their passions and their visions to life – but Jamie Wood is one of those people.
Jamie first volunteered with us in 2015, and most recently as a Companion with Camp Quality Auckland-Northland. This year, right before moving overseas to study in China, she put together a dazzling charity ball to bring together her community, spread awareness for our work, and help raise funds to support this year’s camps. In the end, it wasn’t just a fantastic night to enjoy – but a huge boost for Camp Quality. The event raised nearly $3,000, and generated much-needed volunteer interest in the Auckland area.
How it all began
Jamie’s journey with Camp Quality began long before she ever thought of hosting a fundraising ball. Her first connection with the organisation was through a childhood friend and neighbour who had cancer and would go to Queenstown for camp in the Summer. Every year, Jamie remembers seeing how much of an impact the camp experience had.
“She would come back from camp so excited, thrilled to share all her stories,” Jamie reflected. That early exposure planted the seed, but it wasn’t until university that Jamie experienced camp for the first time. She and her partner came on board as companions in 2015, and she was hooked almost immediately.
“Seeing how much these kids benefit from Camp Quality, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of for the long term,” she shared. “The work that Camp Quality does is so important – not just for the kids, but for their whānau as well.”
After years of experience as a companion, Jamie has developed many friendships and connections through her time at camp. Before leaving for China, she wanted to show her support in a new way – by raising awareness and funds while also creating a beautiful experience to say goodbye to her friends.
“Organising the ball just weeks before leaving was intense, but it was amazing to see everyone come together to support Camp Quality,” Jamie said. “It was a reminder of how much people care and how much impact one event can have.”
Lessons from Camp Quality
For Jamie, Camp Quality has offered more than just an opportunity to volunteer – it’s taught her valuable life lessons.
The camps create a space where both children and volunteers can let go, have fun, and, as Jamie put it, “just be a kid again.”
“Camp Quality reminds you not to take yourself too seriously,” Jamie explained. “It’s about those moments where you forget about everything else and just enjoy being in the moment.”
At camp, companions are paired with one child for the entire week. Every region goes through a rigorous and careful pairing process, where each and every camper and companion are considered based on personality and experience so that it’s always a strong fit. More than just looking after campers, companions are there to help stir up endless fun – and get any shy or nervous kids out of their shell.
“One of my favourite parts of volunteering,” shared Jamie, “was seeing the difference between the first day at camp and the last day. So many kids who come to us for the first time are a little nervous and unsure – but then you see them start to open up, to be themselves, and start to really feel at home. And that’s what Camp Quality is really about – creating this magical, safe space for kids to get to be silly, to try new things, build confidence, and create lasting friendships.”
Continuing the Mission
Through her efforts, Jamie has helped ensure that more children will experience the joy and freedom that Camp Quality provides. The money raised from the charity ball will go directly towards supporting camps and programs that bring laughter and hope to children facing cancer.
Jamie’s story is a powerful reminder of how one person’s passion can make a difference. Whether it’s through volunteering, fundraising, or simply spreading the word, there are countless ways to support causes that matter – and, as Jamie has shown, sometimes all it takes is a little creativity and a lot of heart.
Her advice to anyone else who has considered trying their hand at something new?
“If you care about something, just go for it,” Jamie said. “It’s easy to think of reasons why something is too hard, but putting your heart into it and trying is worth it. This event was a reminder to embrace opportunities and take action.”
